Treatment of VTE in Pediatric Patients
Over recent years there has been a significant increase in knowledge, clinical experience, and available therapies for the diagnosis, prevention, and management of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in neonates, children, and adolescents. The ASH ISTH Guidelines for the Treatment of Pediatric VTE provide evidence-based recommendations to support clinicians in making informed treatment decisions across this diverse age range, including guidance on the use of anticoagulants and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Developed in recognition that VTE in children most often occurs in the setting of serious underlying illness and that the risk–benefit balance of therapy differs from adults, these guidelines aim to optimize outcomes while preserving long-term health and quality of life.
