ASH Sickle Cell Disease Away Elective Rotation

The ASH Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Away Elective Rotation allows select fellowship programs to serve as host institutions for an away elective rotation in areas with higher patients with SCD populations.

The ASH SCD Away Elective Rotation gives three fellows in their second or third year of fellowship the opportunity to gain practical experience in treating SCD patients. This rotation is designed to be an immersive experience in both outpatient and inpatient SCD care. Each fellow will be assigned to one host institution. All applicants are able to rank their host institution preference during the application process. The three host institutions to which applicants can be assigned are:

  • Duke University, Durham, North Carolina
  • Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland
  • University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (pending)

The SCD Away Elective Rotation will last one month and take place in the fall of 2022 or Spring 2023. The host institution will embed the rotating fellow into their existing SCD program and foster engagement with physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs), social workers/care coordinators, mental health providers, and patients with SCD.

Rotating fellows will also participate in multidisciplinary SCD conferences (hematology grand rounds and disease specialty conferences), video conferences with outside providers, and utilize ASH’s online Benign Hematology Curriculum course on SCD.

There is no fee to apply, and ASH provides a $5,000 stipend for travel and housing during the month-long rotation. The program is only available to U.S. based fellows.

If travel restrictions are in place due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, the host institution will defer the rotation until the restrictions are lifted. ASH will notify selected participants of any changes due to the pandemic.
