Committee Mandate
A joint effort of ASH and the European Hematology Association (EHA), the Translational Research Training in Hematology (TRTH) is a unique, year-long training and mentoring program focused on helping junior researchers build successful careers in hematologic translational research. The program is under the purview of the ASH Committee on Training and the EHA Research Committee.
The TRTH Joint Oversight Subcommittee (JOS) – a subcommittee of the ASH Committee on Training and the EHA Research Committee – is responsible for ensuring quality across the TRTH program. Members of the TRTH JOS are required to oversee continual development of the TRTH program; approve faculty members proposed by the TRTH Co-Directors; moderate the study section and serve as study section reviewers if specified by the co-directors; develop and revise all policies and procedures related to the TRTH program; evaluate the program longitudinally and recommend improvements; participate in conference calls throughout the year; and attend at least one hybrid meeting. TRTH JOS members may also serve as faculty members.
The TRTH JOS is comprised of two co-chairs and members representing each of the following specific domains – curriculum, inclusion, evaluation, mentorship, and methodology – along with a former TRTH trainee. Each domain includes either an EHA or ASH member, with the organization representation switching after each term. The number of ASH and EHA appointees is always equal within the six member positions. Members of the subcommittee serve staggered 3-year terms with two members (one from EHA and one from ASH) rotating off each year. Appointed members may not serve as a representative of the same domain on the subcommittee once their term ends. However, they may serve as a representative of another domain or as co-chair with a maximum of two terms in two separate roles. The maximum duration of all possible appointments on the JOS is two 3-year terms on all positions (three years as regular member in one domain + three years as regular member in another domain OR three years as a regular member in one domain + three years as co-chair). Subcommittee members (except for the former TRTH trainee) must serve at least one year as faculty to serve on the subcommittee. Terms on the subcommittee run from July 1 to June 30.
The two TRTH JOS Co-Chairs (one from ASH and one from EHA) are recommended by the ASH Committee on Training and EHA Research Committee and serve a 3-year term, without the possibility of renewal. The co-chairs serve as liaison members of the ASH Committee on Training and the EHA Research Committee. Subcommittee members may only be nominated to serve as co-chair if they have served at least one term on the subcommittee within the previous five years. Members recommend candidates to the ASH Committee on Training and EHA Research Committee when the current co-chair terms are about to expire.
The TRTH Co-Directors (one from ASH and one from EHA) serve as ex officio, non-voting members of the TRTH JOS with terms congruent to their terms as co-directors. The co-directors choose the incoming co-directors which are approved by the TRTH JOS, ASH Committee on Training, and EHA Research Committee before the ASH Executive Committee and the EHA Executive Board. Members of the TRTH JOS along with faculty from the current year nominate candidates.
