Making a Positive Impact

The ASH Center for Sickle Cell Disease Initiatives released a 10-year impact report that detailed the Society’s progress in leading a comprehensive and determined effort to strengthen the global response to SCD.

Leading on the Global Stage

The Consortium on Newborn Screening in Africa (CONSA), operating in its fifth year, is an international network that demonstrates the benefits of newborn screening and early interventions for children with SCD in sub-Saharan Africa.

Advocating on Capitol Hill

ASH remained committed to sickle cell disease advocacy, successfully pushing for the re-introduction of the Sickle Cell Disease Comprehensive Care Act in both the House and Senate. The bill would improve care for Medicaid beneficiaries living with SCD.

Showcasing SCD Data and Research

The ASH Research Collaborative (ASH RC) released its first Sickle Cell Disease Data Hub Report and the Living with Sickle Cell Disease Report. Designed for clinicians, researchers, and the SCD community, the report includes information on patient demographics, common comorbidities, medication prescribing patterns, and more.

On the research front, ASH highlighted five studies presented at the 2025 ASH Annual Meeting which revealed new opportunities to improve care for people living with SCD. A systematic review published in Blood found that sickle cell trait does not cause “sickle cell crisis” and exertion-related death.

Providing Clinical Resources

ASH finalized two clinical quality measures on appropriate management of SCD-related pain in emergency department settings, for use by healthcare systems and for research.
