Get Involved at ASH: Volunteer Opportunities
Get Involved at ASH: Volunteer Opportunities
This webinar focuses on volunteer opportunities at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) and how members can become more involved in the Society. Aaron Gerds, MD, who at the time served as editor-in-chief of ASH Clinical News, facilitated a roundtable discussion with three ASH members at various career stages and with different levels of volunteer experience and involvement with ASH. Topics of discussion include the different types of volunteer opportunities available at ASH, why individuals should get involved, and how to take that first step.

Getting involved with ASH as a volunteer was one of the best choices I have made in my career. I would encourage anyone thinking of volunteering for ASH to act on it. There are so many options ranging from research to training and advocacy where individuals of all levels of training can make a difference by volunteering.

Career Mentorship
Career Mentorship
Mentorship is key to a successful career, and ASH has numerous opportunities for more seasoned professionals to leverage their skills and experiences to make a positive impact on next generation of hematologists. Individuals from a workforce that reflects the patient population it serves are particularly encouraged to apply.

Advocacy
Advocacy
Educating lawmakers and policymakers on critical issues affecting hematology research and practice is an important role that every ASH member can help play. Advocacy can be as easy as sending a letter to Congress through a few clicks of the mouse or as immersive as a year-long fellowship working in a Congressional office. ASH offers a variety of opportunities to help shape policies to ensure the best care of patients with blood disorders.

Meeting Leadership and Development
Meeting Leadership and Development
ASH meetings could not succeed without the support of numerous volunteers at every level. In addition to high-visibility roles such as presenter and moderator, there are many volunteers working behind the scenes reviewing abstracts, providing real-time peer-review of scientific sessions, etc. In addition, ASH offers leadership opportunities for members interested in representing the Society at external meetings.
