Public Comment on Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Management of von Willebrand Disease

The American Society of Hematology (ASH), the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF), and the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH), are collaborating to develop guidelines for the diagnosis and management of VWD.

The ASH, ISTH, NHF, WFH Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Management of von Willebrand Disease are based on systematic reviews of available evidence. Through a structured process, two guideline panels made judgements about the evidence and formed recommendations.

ASH, ISTH, NHF, and the WFH invite public comment on these DRAFT recommendations; the public comment period ends on May 15, 2020:

ASH, ISTH, NHF, and the WFH are committed to a transparent guideline development process that incorporates a diverse range of perspectives. Open comment periods engage stakeholders in the guideline development process in a transparent and comprehensive way, thereby strengthening the content and credibility of the final clinical practice guidelines.

Anyone is welcome to comment on draft recommendations, including ASH, ISTH, NHF, and WFH members, non-member physicians and researchers, allied professionals, representatives of industry and insurance companies, patients, caregivers, and members of the public.

Development Process

These guidelines are based on a systematic review of available evidence. Through a structured process, a guideline panel makes judgments about the evidence and forms recommendations. The guideline panel includes clinical and methodological experts as well as patient representatives.

The public comment period occurs after recommendations are formed but before a manuscript report of the guidelines has been finalized and before ASH, ISTH, NHF, and WFH organizational approval of the guidelines. Comments collected during the open comment period are provided to the guideline panel for review prior to finalizing the guidelines. Comments are also considered during multiple steps that follow, including ASH organizational approval of the guidelines, peer review of the guidelines for journal publication, implementation and dissemination efforts following publication, and future revision of the guidelines.

These guidelines are developed in accordance with the recommendations outlined in the Institute of Medicine’s Clinical Practice Guidelines We Can Trust.
