NHLBI Releases Draft Strategic Research Priorities for Review and Comments

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) released the draft strategic research priorities for its strategic visioning process and is requesting additional input from the scientific community by August 28, 2015. The strategic planning process aims to identify compelling questions and critical challenges in scientific knowledge, healthcare quality, and workforce issues that should be addressed within the next decade. NHLBI received over 1,000 ideas and more than 42,000 votes through its Strategic Visioning Forum, exceeding all expectations.

ASH submitted several research recommendations based on the ASH Agenda for Hematology Research and ASH Sickle Cell Priorities and is pleased to see many of them incorporated into the NHLBI’s draft strategic research priorities. The Society thanks all of its members who submitted and voted for ideas through the Strategic Visioning Forum.

NHLBI is asking the community to review the draft priorities and identify any remaining gaps. All ASH members are encouraged to review and comment by August 28, 2015. The NHLBI plans to release a final list of strategic research priorities for public comment in the fall. The final Strategic Vision will be released in early 2016. Please contact ASH Director of Scientific Affairs, Ulyana V. Desiderio, PhD for more information.
