Study Section Review

To recruit the best scientific minds, foster professional growth, and advance research discovery, ASH hosts a variety of annual Study Sections (based on the NIH model) that support the ASH portfolio of career development and training award programs.

As a Study Section Reviewer, volunteers will assess the scientific merit of grants to determine which research should receive funding from ASH and lend their expertise in helping to recruit and retain the next generation of hematologists. Whether you are in the early, mid, or late stages of your hematology career, we encourage you to apply!

Applicants in fellowship can select to become Junior Reviewers and:

  • Gain insights into the grant writing and review process.
  • Learn how to review research with a critical eye.
  • Network with scientific experts.

Junior Reviewers assist the study section by taking notes and synthesizing reviewer feedback on the grants. Strong writing and listening skills and experience with synthesizing numerous points of view is needed.

Application Process & Eligibility Requirements

Become a Study Section Reviewer or a Junior Reviewer by submitting your ASH Study Section Reviewer Interest Form. To be eligible, applicants must the meet the following criteria:

  • Be an ASH member in good standing at the time of the application, and plan to maintain membership through the time that you serve as a reviewer. Membership may be pending at the application deadline, but the applicant must be a member by the time your study section begins. If the applicant qualifies for active membership, their membership cannot be pending as the membership won’t start until January.
  • Have an MD/DO, PhD, MD/DO-PhD, MBBS, DPhil, PharmD (or equivalent), and serve as Associate/Assistant Professor or beyond.

Once submitted, your application will be reviewed by volunteer leadership. As we accept applications on a rolling basis, you may be contacted if your scientific expertise is relevant to a specific review, as needs arise.

In acknowledgement of the value of having diverse perspectives and experiences present, multiple different facets of diversity are considered in selecting the overall makeup of reviewer pools. The Society welcomes and encourages engagement and participation of individuals as study section reviewers regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, ability, national origin, or other attributes. Please note that conflicts of interest are considered in the reviewer selection process.
