International Outreach Initiative

Since 1999, ASH has distributed educational materials to hospitals and universities in low- and middle-income countries through its International Outreach Initiative (IOI). The goal of the IOI is to help address hematology-related needs in these areas, with regards to research, practice, and training.

The ASH International Members Committee oversees the IOI.

Program Materials

The online educational materials that are available through the IOI include:

  • Online access to the most recent edition of the ASH Self-Assessment Program (ASH-SAP), a comprehensive educational resource that features case studies, key points, and self-test questions and answers.
  • Online access to the most recent edition of Hematology, the ASH Education Program, which provides in-depth chapters covering each session presented in the ASH Annual Meeting Education Program.
  • Webcast featuring presentations of the Education and Scientific Program sessions from the most recent ASH Annual Meeting.
  • Webcast featuring presentations from the most recent Highlights of ASH.
  • Webcast featuring presentations from the most recent ASH Meeting on Hematologic Malignancies.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The applicant must be from a low- or middle-income country.
  • The applicant must be affiliated with a hospital, university, clinic, or a cooperative group of institutions within an eligible region. ASH will not consider applications for personal or individual use.

The following materials are not included in the IOI, but are already available to the public on the ASH website.

A variety of ASH Academy On Demand offerings have been developed by subject-matter experts to meet your professional education needs. Activities include online courses, webcasts, and simulations. Not all products on ASH Academy On Demand are available at no cost to the public.

ASH Clinical News is a magazine for ASH members and non-members alike – offering news and views for the broader hematology/oncology community. Each month, ASH Clinical News provides the latest updates in the field – from on-site conference reporting, to the latest trials published in Blood, to policy issues affecting the science and practice of hematology – as well as perspectives and opinions from key leaders. The publication will also provide tools and resources to help clinicians with quality and performance improvement, patient education, and the economics of running a practice.

Blood Advances is a semimonthly medical journal published by ASH which provides an international forum for the publication of original articles describing basic laboratory, translational, and clinical investigations and guidelines in hematology. The journal covers all aspects of hematology, including disorders of leukocytes, both benign and malignant, erythrocytes, platelets, hemostatic mechanisms, vascular biology, immunology, and hematologic oncology.

An online subscription to Blood, the journal of the American Society of Hematology, is only available through the Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) of the World Health Organization. If you would like to receive free online access to Blood, please visit the HINARI website for eligibility and instructions on how to register your institution.

Blood Online Latin American edition, which debuted in 2018, features a selection of Blood articles curated by a team of leading hematologist in the region, covering the full aspects of hematology, including malignant and non-malignant disorders. The articles are presented in an educational format with key learning points, Question & Answers, and the local perspective of an expert from the continent, presented in Spanish and Portuguese language.

The editors of Blood are pleased to introduce a new podcast series, published weekly in conjunction with each issue of Blood. Each episode will highlight selected content from recent articles published in the journal. You can listen on the ASH website, iTunes, Google Play, and Spotify.

The American Society of Hematology Image Bank is a Web-based image library that offers a comprehensive collection of images relating to a wide range of hematologic topics. The ASH Image Bank is a public website that allows the entire hematology community the ability to discover high quality, peer-reviewed hematologic images.

The Hematologist: ASH News & Reports is ASH’s official member newsletter. The Hematologist is published six times per year and covers important developments in hematologic research, clinical practice, and health-care policy, as well as important updates about Society events, initiatives, and services.

The Hematologist offers podcasts that enhance the reading experience by presenting key results and additional insights from published articles in a convenient audio format.
