Clinical Research Training Institute
The ASH Clinical Research Training Institute (CRTI) is a unique, year-long education and mentoring program for hematology fellows and junior faculty at academic medical centers. CRTI offers a broad education on clinical research methods, research collaborations, statistical analysis, and the management of career and family demands. Its goal is to develop future leaders in clinical hematology by equipping participants with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to transform innovative research ideas into successful, practice-changing studies.
CRTI consists of four mandatory components:
- A week-long intensive workshop in August 2027 in La Jolla, California, which focuses on the foundation, methodologies, and application of patient-oriented clinical research
- A meeting at the ASH annual meeting in December 2027
- A one-day class in May 2028 at ASH Headquarters in Washington, DC
- Networking, mentorship, and education via virtual platforms, which takes place between the in-person meetings
An Unprecedented Investment
In response to ongoing threats to federal funding of hematology research and resources, since 2025 ASH has more than doubled its level of support for awards, career development opportunities, and mentorship programs to nearly $50 million, supporting 3,500+ awards. This investment includes an additional $25 million that goes far above and beyond ASH’s traditional funding levels as part of the #Fight4Hematology campaign..
Program Overview
There is no fee to apply, and ASH pays for participants’ travel expenses to the summer workshop and final class meeting in the spring. Travel costs and other expenses associated with attending the ASH annual meeting are the responsibility of the participant and/or the participant’s academic institution. Each year, 28 awardees (14 malignant hematology-focused awardees and 14 classical hematology-focused awardees) are selected to participate in the prestigious and rigorous training program led by faculty who are leaders in hematology.
