About
About the ASH Ambassador Program
Lead. Inspire. Build a Hematology Community at Your Institution.
ASH strives to develop innovative recruitment strategies and resources that resonate with medical students, residents, fellows, and other trainees.
ASH Ambassadors serve as faculty champions for the Hematology Student Interest Group at their DO or MD medical school in the U.S. The ASH Ambassador Program equips these faculty members with tools, training, and resources to spark medical students’ interest in hematology and build a lasting hematology presence on their campus.
With ASH funding, Ambassadors introduce medical students to hematology and the field’s many career paths by way of educational, networking, and social events both on and off their medical school campus. ASH Ambassadors create and lead their school’s Hematology Student Interest Group, provide mentorship and hands-on learning experiences, and connect students with ASH programs, awards, and resources, such as ASH’s Horizons in Hematology program.

Eligibility and Commitments
Eligibility and Commitments
To be eligible, applicants must be a current ASH member in good standing and must remain as such for the duration of their time as an ASH Ambassador at their current School of Medicine (SOM).
To be an effective ASH Ambassador, selected faculty must commit to:
- Serving as an ASH Ambassador faculty for a one-year term that runs from July 1st through June 30th, with the option for renewal;
- Identifying a Junior Ambassador, a medical student in good academic standing, who will assist the faculty member with required activities throughout the year;
- Hosting or supporting a minimum of four student-focused activities during the program year, with ASH support;
- Participating in quarterly virtual meetings throughout the year and attending ASH-a-Palooza at the ASH Annual Meeting with facilitation of medical student activities, as appropriate during the meeting;
- Traveling to Washington, D.C., for ASH Ambassador and Junior Ambassador meetings. Both you and your selected Junior Ambassador must be available for the in-person June meeting to serve in these roles (meeting dates can be found on the award page)
- Adhering to ASH’s Conflict of Interest policy and disclosing any relevant interests via the ASH COI form for ASH Ambassador participation;
Please note: If an ambassador leaves their current School of Medicine, the Ambassador role does not automatically roll forward to the new institution. They would need to contact ASH staff for guidance on their eligibility to remain an ASH Ambassador at their new medical school. Furthermore, only one ASH Ambassador faculty member per LCME- or COCA-accredited U.S. medical school may be selected and eligible to serve for a one-year term.
ASH recognizes the need to generate the next generation of hematologists. The ASH Ambassador program strives to introduce medical students to the wonders of hematology early in their career, showing them why it is such a wonderful career to pursue. Having Ambassadors who are enthusiastic, compassionate, and innovative helps to engage and energize the students into pursuing a career in hematology.

Review Process, Selection, and Notification
The ASH Ambassador Oversight Subcommittee evaluates all complete and submitted application packages. The review process considers each candidate’s leadership; experience with medical student, recruitment, outreach, and engagement, passion for hematology; and alignment with the goal of mentoring and championing the next generation of hematologists.
The review process also considers geographic diversity and each candidate’s potential contributions to ASH’s broader goals for Student Interest Groups and trainee engagement.
