Careers in Hematology Advancement Mentorship Program (CHAMP)

The ASH Careers in Hematology Advancement Mentorship Program (CHAMP) is a unique, year-long opportunity for current first or second-year pediatric and adult hematology/oncology fellows with interests in clinical careers in classical and malignant hematology to be matched with an external mentor. Through this program, which consists of virtual and in-person components, trainees will be able to ensure that they have the guidance to pursue careers in hematology, especially for those training at institutions where robust hematology mentorship may not be available.

Background

CHAMP was developed in response to published data citing the importance of mentorship in career development in academic medicine. The goal of this unique, year-long opportunity for current first- or second-year pediatric and adult hematology/oncology fellows is to address the lack of mentorship in classical and malignant hematology through external mentorship.

CHAMP includes two separate programs:

Mentee Eligibility

Fellows

You are eligible to apply if you meet both of the following requirements:

• You are an ASH Associate Member or FHF Member in good standing at the time of the application
• You are in your first or second-year of hematology/oncology fellowship training at accredited programs in the United States as of June 5, 2027.

Residents

You are eligible to apply if you meet all three of these of the following requirements:

• Third Year Medicine, Med/Peds, or Pediatric Residents
• You are a Resident Member in good standing at the time of the application
• You are in your third year of residency training at accredited programs in the United States in May of 2027 and will be transitioning into your first-year fellowship June 2027. 

ASH works to ensure a diverse applicant pool and participating cohort in the CHAMP program. This includes having representation of the diverse perspectives, talents and experiences of individuals, including but not limited to, those from centers without robust hematology training and individuals from communities underrepresented in hematology.

Mentee Application Process

The ASH Careers in Hematology Advancement Mentorship Program application, as well as supporting documents outlined below, must be submitted through ASH's online awards portal.

All applications must include the following:

• Career interest statement
• Applicant’s curriculum vitae (CV)
• Letter of support from training program director (non - HFFTP fellows)

Mentor Eligibility

You are eligible to apply if you meet both of the following requirements:

• You are an ASH member in good standing. To verify your membership status, please log in to your ASH account.
• You are a current classical or malignant hematologist or researcher at an institution in the U.S. or Canada with a clear passion for mentorship.

The ASH Mentor a CHAMP application, as well as the applicant’s curriculum vitae (CV), must be submitted through ASH’s online awards portal.
