ASH Drug Update: Limited Quantities of Methotrexate Available

Published on: February 16, 2012

Yesterday ASH notified its membership with information about the severe shortage of preservative free large vials of methotrexate. The Society has been working closely with the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure that hematologists and patients have access to this therapy as soon as possible. This morning, Bedford Laboratories announced that it has limited quantities available of methotrexate preservative-free 1 gram lyophilized powder for injection (NDC 55390-0143-01) and 250 mg/10 ml (NDC 55390-0034-10) with short expiry. The product will be allocated to practices and hospitals starting today.Below is additional information ASH has obtained concerning how to order supplies:

  • If your practice or hospital contracts with Bedford Laboratories, contact your Bedford Account Executive to order supplies. If you do not know the contact information for your Account Executive, contact the Bedford Laboratories customer service at 1-800-562-4797.
  • If your practice or hospital does not contract with Bedford Laboratories, contact your institution's wholesaler to place a drop shipment order of the therapy.
  • If you have any additional questions and/or encounter any problems reaching your account executive or wholesaler, you should contact Bedford Laboratories Customer service at 1-800-562-4797.
  • FDA encourages hospitals and centers to only obtain enough to meet patient needs at this time until the supplies improve over the coming weeks. The FDA anticipates additional new releases will occur by end of this month and ongoing into March. This emergency supply from Bedford will help hospitals and centers meet immediate patient needs until the new releases occur.

ASH will continue to track the methotrexate shortage closely and will notify the membership as soon as additional supplies become available. The Society is also urging FDA to ensure an effective distribution plan. Please visit the ASH Drug Update page for more details about this and other drug shortages.
