President Bush Announces von Eschenbach Nomination as FDA Chief
March 15, 2006 – Dr. Andrew C. von Eschenbach was nominated by President George W. Bush to serve as Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Dr. von Eschenbach has served as acting FDA commissioner since September 2005. No decision has been made regarding the new director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Therefore, for the time being, Dr. von Eschenbach will maintain his current title of NCI Director while also serving as Acting Commissioner of FDA. Dr. John Niederhuber will continue to serve as the chief operating officer (COO) of the NCI.
