New Leadership Elected to the American Society of Hematology
(WASHINGTON, October 23, 2007) - The American Society of Hematology (ASH), the world’s largest professional society of blood specialists, welcomes three new officers to its Executive Committee, the governing body of the organization. The officers will begin serving their terms in January 2008.
Hal E. Broxmeyer, PhD, will serve a one-year term as vice president, followed by successive terms as president-elect and president. New councillors Thomas Bensinger, MD, and Stephanie Lee, MD, MPH, will serve four-year terms. These individuals are well-respected hematologists and active members of the Society.
Dr. Broxmeyer is a veteran of the Executive Committee, having served as a councillor from 2002-2005. He also served on ASH’s Committee on Publications for eight years and was on the subcommittee that helped shepherd Blood, the Society’s scientific journal, into self-publication. Dr. Broxmeyer is currently Distinguished Professor, Chairman and Mary Margaret Walther Professor of Microbiology/Immunology, and Scientific Director of the Walther Oncology Center at the Indiana University School of Medicine. This year, he was also selected to present the E. Donnall Thomas Lecture at ASH’s annual meeting, an honor that recognizes pioneering achievements in hematology.
Dr. Bensinger has participated on ASH’s Committee on Practice for many years and currently serves on the Reimbursement Subcommittee. As a private practitioner in Greenbelt, MD, one of his roles on the Executive Committee will be to voice the concerns and pressing issues facing the clinical practice community to the ASH leadership.
