ASH is about to begin development and production of its fourth edition of the American Society of Hematology Self-Assessment Program (ASH-SAP), and is now accepting co-editor applications. The ASH-SAP is composed of a syllabus divided into chapters dedicated to specific topic areas in hematology and a set of case-based, multiple-choice questions and critiques. It is designed to provide timely clinical updates on new developments in hematology, help practicing physicians prepare for recertification, and serve as a tool for board review.
Duties
ASH seeks two co-editors to help lead the development of the ASH-SAP Fourth Edition, which is scheduled to be published in May 2010. The co-editors should have a broad understanding of adult and pediatric hematology; in addition to leading the development of the ASH-SAP, co-editors' duties will include the following:
- Evaluating the content of previous ASH-SAP editions and user surveys to improve the ASH-SAP product
- Identifying the latest clinical developments in adult and pediatric hematology
- Identifying chapter co-authors to write text for the Fourth Edition syllabus text and case-based, multiple-choice questions
- Reviewing and providing feedback on the Fourth Edition syllabus text and case-based, multiple-choice question drafts
- Helping chapter authors identify overlap between chapters to optimize and link ASH-SAP content
- Helping ASH staff collect author materials to meet production deadlines
- Co-hosting an ASH-SAP authors' meeting at the 2008 ASH Annual Meeting
- Providing guidance with marketing efforts as needed
- Working with the ASH Committee on Educational Affairs to select chapter authors and receive oversight
- Contributing editorial content to chapters in areas of expertise
Required experience/skills
- Extensive knowledge of areas in adult and/or pediatric hematology
- Proven ability to meet strict production deadlines
- Previous writing for hematology publications
- Ability to identify timely clinical information and evaluate the previous edition's content
- Ability to collaborate with co-editors, ASH staff, other ASH-SAP authors, and peer review groups as required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, including using tracked changes
- Locating resources of interest for an annotated bibliography
Preferred experience/skills
- Experience writing for the ASH-SAP, other ASH publications, or the Hematology and Oncology section of the MKSAP
- Ability to create high-resolution graphics and tables to enhance chapter content
- Experience working with peer review software
Co-editors will receive honoraria as well as paid expenses for two days at the 2008 ASH Annual Meeting. The two co-editors will also be expected to provide text for the syllabus and case-based, multiple-choice questions for chapters in their areas of expertise.

Resumes with cover letters are due by April 30, 2008, and must be submitted electronically to Helena Mickle, ASH-SAP Managing Editor. Only electronic submissions will be accepted.
In your cover letter, please be sure to list your areas of expertise (i.e., hemolytic anemias, myeloid disorders, etc.) according to the ASH-SAP chapter list. All applicants will also be considered for chapter co-author positions.
