In January 2006, the American Board of Internal
Medicine (ABIM) modified its requirements for physicians seeking recertification.
In addition to passing a secure exam and verifying credentials, all physicians need to secure 100 lifelong learning points (20 knowledge points, 20 practice improvement points, and 60 elective points) to maintain their certification. To help meet this need, hematologists who are board certified and currently enrolled in ABIM’s Maintenance of Certification program may earn points through the ASH Self-Assessment Program with Maintenance of Certification (ASH-SAP/MOC) and Practice Improvement Modules (PIMs).
ASH Self-Assessment Program with Maintenance of Certification
The ASH-SAP/MOC includes a textbook available in print and online, and an accompanying exam, which includes more than 220 questions in adult hematology. Upon completion of the ASH-SAP/MOC, participants in the ABIM MOC program earn 70 medical knowledge points in addition to 50 AMA PRA Category 1 CME credits™.
Practice Improvement Modules
The PIM allows participants in the ABIM MOC program to conduct self-evaluation of practice performance and earn 20 practice improvement points in addition to 20 Category 1 CME credits. As a service to hematologists, the PIM chart abstraction tool and personal results report are provided free of charge on the ASH Web site.
