Ernest Beutler, past president of ASH, died on October 5, 2008, at 80 years of age. Only a few months ago, Dr. Beutler's immense contributions to hematology were summarized in the May/June 2008 and January/February 2008 issues in The Hematologist in two articles: a brief biography and an acknowledgment of his receiving the Wallace H. Coulter Award for Lifetime Achievement in Hematology.

Dr. Beutler pursued his work with extraordinary intellectual power. Both the breadth of his research and the fluency of his writing were incomparable. He always pursued both basic and patient-centered research...

Read Dr. Beutler's full obituary written by Josef Prchal, MD, and Karl Blume, MD, in the November/December 2008 issue of The Hematologist.

The Scripps Research Institute will hold a memorial service to recall the extraordinary life and career of Dr. Beutler on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. PT, in the Pavilion Gardens at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. All friends and colleagues of the late Dr. Beutler are cordially invited.

We encourage you to honor Dr. Beutler by sharing your thoughts or stories through the Legends in Hematology Guestbook or by making a special gift to ASH.

Obituary

I've had the privilege of working with Ernie at TSRI over the past five years. He possessed a combination of intellectual rigor, creative thinking, encyclopedic knowledge, and the wisdom to put these gifts together in an extraordinarily productive manner. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him and learn from him.

– Jeff Friedman

I am Susie Wells, Dr. Beutler's (Uncle Ernie as I fondly called him), "patient patient." He is and always will be MY HERO, My Guardian Angel. I was his first patient from January 1990 on the low-dose Ceredase clinical trial that SAVED MY LIFE, that gave me a SECOND CHANCE at life! Dr. Beutler and I have kept in touch all these years, and I promised to always stand up to everyone on his behalf for his hard work in trying a low-dose regimen when others disagreed with his hypotheses. I would not be here writing if it weren't for my dear Dr. Beutler. I love him and miss him terribly, and there will NEVER be another more dedicated doctor/researcher on this earth. I thank you, Uncle Ernie, with all my heart, with every breath I take, thank you! Your Patient Patient eternally grateful, till we meet again.

– Susie Wells
