Janet Rowley Receives National Academy of Sciences Award

ASH member Janet D. Rowley, MD, of the University of Chicago is the 2010 recipient of the National Academy of Sciences Jessie Stevenson Kovalenko Medal for her discovery of recurring chromosome translocations that characterize specific hematologic malignancies. This was a landmark event that caused a major shift in the paradigms relating to cancer biology in the 1970s and paved the way for development of specific treatment for two leukemias.
