Doris Duke Charitable Foundation to Fund Sickle Cell Disease Clinical Research

The 2009 Innovation in Clinical Research Award competition invites proposals for clinical research that have the potential to catalyze innovative breakthroughs in the treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD). It is the hope that these awards will attract new investigators into clinical SCD research. Two former ASH presidents are on the review panel for the competition, which will provide seed funding for early-stage, multidisciplinary projects in clinical research of sickle cell disease (SCD) - Edward J. Benz Jr., MD, and Arthur W. Nienhuis, MD. In addition, David G. Nathan, MD, the chairman of DDCF’s Scientific Advisory Council and former ASH president, has been very involved in guiding DDCF’s decision to provide funding for sickle cell disease research this year.
