As this issue of The Hematologist went to press, Congress
was set to begin its federal appropriations process for fiscal year
(FY) 2010. President Obama announced a broad outline of his FY 2010
budget proposal in late February, which included more than $6 billion
in proposed funding within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to
support cancer research.
Despite the temporary two-year boost in funding provided to NIH by
the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), continued growth in
NIH’s regular yearly appropriations is essential to ensuring continued
groundbreaking basic, clinical, and translational research in
hematology. Although Congress and the Obama administration have
expressed support for NIH, it remains critical for all ASH members to
contact their senators and representatives to help ensure that Congress
continues to get the message that sustained funding for NIH research is
necessary. To this end, ASH has launched an advocacy campaign.
