This evening ASH will celebrate the seventh year of its Minority Recruitment Initiative (MRI) at the annual Promoting Minorities in Hematology Presentations and Reception. The event will offer attendees a chance to network with colleagues, medical students, and ASH leadership, while learning about the Society’s Minority Medical Student Award Program (MMSAP) and the ASH-Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program (AMFDP).
The program will feature the 2010 MMSAP participants, as they engage attendees with their summer research project presentations. Another highlight of the evening will be the announcement of the fifth recipient of the ASH-AMFDP award, a partnership between ASH and AMFDP of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The 2010 ASH-AMFDP winner is Adrienne Phillips, MD, MPH. Dr. Phillips is an assistant professor of clinical medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. She received her medical degree from Brown University in Providence, RI, and completed her residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Phillips is not new to the Society’s award programs; she was also a 2007 participant in the Clinical Research Training Institute.
Before and after these presentations, the second-year MMSAP participants and students from the NHLBI Minority Research Supplement Program will be presenting their posters. Representatives from National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and National Institute on Aging will be in attendance to provide information about their various training and research offerings. In addition, representatives from AMFDP and ASH will have additional information on how to apply for the MMSAP and the ASH-AMFDP awards.
The Promoting Minorities in Hematology Presentations and Reception will be held this evening from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the Orange Ballroom A and B at the Hilton Orlando. Guests will enjoy a buffet dinner immediately following the ASH-AMFDP and MMSAP presentations.
