Congress Passes Legislation to Avert Government Shutdown and Restore Funding to NIH

Once again narrowly avoiding a shutdown of the federal government, on March 21 Congress passed a continuing resolution, or CR, to fund the federal government for the remainder of fiscal year (FY) 2013. Both the House and Senate approved the plan, which maintains sequestration, prior to the expiration of the current CR on March 27.

Because the Congress was unable to reach an agreement on how to reduce the deficit, last Friday, March 1, President Obama issued the order implementing the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts known as "sequestration."

As the world’s largest professional society concerned with the causes and treatment of blood disorders, many of ASH's more than 14,000 members heavily rely on funding from the National Institutes of Health to conduct cutting-edge research that results in cures and better treatments for millions of patients with blood diseases and cancer around the world. Thanks to congressional action late New Year’s Day that delays the sequester for two months our members’ work to develop cures for some of America’s most deadly diseases will not be interrupted today. The Society is also pleased that Congress has prevented the scheduled 27 percent cut to physician payment.

Late January 1, the U.S. House of Representatives passed 257-167 the Senate-passed fiscal cliff deal (HR 8) to extend expiring tax cuts and delay automatic spending cuts that were set to take effect today.
