The American Society of Hematology (ASH) and the European Hematology Association (EHA) announce the names of 20 early-career hematologists chosen to participate in the 2013 Translational Research Training in Hematology (TRTH) joint program. The TRTH, now in its fourth year, provides junior researchers from around the world with a unique, yearlong training and mentoring experience with the goal of fostering the next generation of global leaders in the field of translational research.

As the world’s largest professional society concerned with the causes and treatment of blood disorders, many of ASH's more than 14,000 members heavily rely on funding from the National Institutes of Health to conduct cutting-edge research that results in cures and better treatments for millions of patients with blood diseases and cancer around the world. Thanks to congressional action late New Year’s Day that delays the sequester for two months our members’ work to develop cures for some of America’s most deadly diseases will not be interrupted today. The Society is also pleased that Congress has prevented the scheduled 27 percent cut to physician payment.

American Society of Hematology Launches ASH Foundation

The American Society of Hematology today announced the creation of the ASH Foundation dedicated to curing blood diseases. The new foundation will complement and build on the work of the Society by harnessing the generosity of donors to expand the reach of successful ASH programs and develop new initiatives to address critical issues facing hematology researchers and clinicians.

American Society of Hematology Holds 10th Annual Clinical Research Training Institute

The American Society of Hematology today announced the names of 20 hematology and hematology/oncology fellows and junior faculty selected to participate in the 10th annual ASH Clinical Research Training Institute. This unique, year-long education and mentoring program is designed to prepare hematologists and hematologists/oncologists in their second year of fellowship through their third year after fellowship completion at academic medical centers in the United States and Canada for careers in patient-oriented clinical research.

Medical Trainees Receive Support to Conduct Hematology Research

The American Society of Hematology (ASH) today announced the 2012 recipients of the ASH Trainee Research Award (TRA). This year, 44 trainees will receive $4,000 each to conduct research on blood and blood-related diseases as part of this program, which is designed to expose them to both hematology and research early in their careers and to inspire them to pursue research in hematology as part of their future training.

ASH Urges Congress to Avert Sequestration; Protect Government Functions

The American Society of Hematology (ASH) and others from the nondefense discretionary (NDD) community today delivered a letter to Congress, urging leaders to avert sequestration by adopting a “balanced approach to deficit reduction that does not include further cuts to NDD programs.” Joining ASH in this effort are nearly 3,000 national, state, and local organizations from all 50 states representing the biomedical, education, and public safety communities, among others. Despite the collective’s diverse interests, each organization shares a common purpose of protecting the core government functions comprising NDD spending from further cuts.

A program designed to accelerate the entry of outstanding junior investigators into independent researcher positions immediately following completion of their graduate research degree or clinical residency has announced its first recipients. The National Institutes of Health Director's Early Independence Awards (EIA) is part of an NIH-wide effort to empower the biomedical research workforce, particularly through the support of investigators early in their careers.
