Andrew I. Schafer, MD, the 2007 president of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), and Bruce R. Blazar, MD, and Carl H. June, MD, the recipients of the 2012 ASH Ernest Beutler Lecture and Prize, are among the 70 new members and 10 foreign associates elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Election to the IOM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.
