Medical Trainees Receive Support to Conduct Hematology Research

(WASHINGTON) – The American Society of Hematology (ASH) today announced the 2012 recipients of the ASH Trainee Research Award (TRA). This year, 44 trainees will receive $4,000 each to conduct research on blood and blood-related diseases as part of this program, which is designed to expose them to both hematology and research early in their careers and to inspire them to pursue research in hematology as part of their future training.

In addition to receiving research funds, each awardee will receive $1,000 to travel to the 54th ASH Annual Meeting at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta in December. Attendance at this event, the premier annual education and scientific meeting in the field of hematology, provides TRA recipients with many opportunities to network with leaders in the field and to learn about the latest research and therapies in hematology.

“By providing these promising trainees with funds to work on hematology projects in laboratory research or clinical investigation, we hope to encourage their pursuit of research and further spark their interest in hematology,” said ASH President Armand Keating, MD, of Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. “We anticipate hearing more about the discoveries made by this talented group in the years to come.”

Since 1995, Trainee Research Awards have supported hundreds of undergraduates, medical students, and residents at institutions in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The funding is distributed through the awardees’ institutions and supports the trainees’ research projects for a duration of three to 12 months.
