American Society of Hematology Announces 2012 Translational Research Training in Hematology Program Participants

(WASHINGTON) – The American Society of Hematology (ASH) and the European Hematology Association (EHA) announce the names of 20 early-career hematologists chosen to participate in the 2012 Translational Research Training in Hematology (TRTH) joint program. The TRTH, now in its third year, provides junior researchers from around the world with a unique, yearlong training and mentoring experience with the goal of fostering the next generation of global leaders in the field of translational research.

Modeled after ASH’s successful Clinical Research Training Institute (CRTI), the TRTH program begins with a rigorous one-week training course to be held March 17 to 23, 2012, in Milan, Italy. During the weeklong course, participants will attend didactic and interactive sessions led by TRTH faculty, some of the world’s leading hematology and translational researchers, on translational research methodology and regulatory requirements. Trainees will also participate in small-group sessions with their TRTH peers and faculty to refine individual research proposals and attend informal presentations by leaders in hematology that are designed to illustrate the variety of pathways to a successful career in hematology research through personal experience.

After the initial weeklong course, participants will meet again at the EHA annual congress in June and again at the ASH annual meeting in December to review the progress of their projects.

“As the world of scientific collaboration becomes more global each year, translational researchers need to understand and direct research in both the European and U.S. systems,” said ASH President Armand Keating, MD of the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. “The TRTH program is special in that it not only teaches the basics of research methodology, epidemiology, and biostatistics, but it also allows participants to gain hands-on experience in these disciplines, while at the same time providing a network of peers and mentors that will be a source of support in the years to come.”

The TRTH program is geared toward medical trainees, biomedical trainees, and pharmaceutical doctorate trainees generally within 12 years of receiving their medical degrees or with less than eight years of postdoctoral experience. Trainees must be members of either ASH or EHA.
