The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Strategic Planning in the Office of the Director (OD) has developed an interactive website for the scientific community to weigh in on the ideas submitted for new FY 2013 Common Fund programs.
This comment website is intended to allow NIH staff and the general community to help shape programs that may emerge from this strategic planning process. In their current form, some of the ideas are very broad and may need to be refined, while others may need to be expanded to have greater impact or to otherwise fully address the criteria for Common Fund programs. The NIH is looking for input about how to shape these ideas so that the Common Fund investment will have a catalytic, transformative impact on a broad range of diseases and conditions.
The comment period is open for six weeks and the website will close in mid-September to compile the comments for review by OD Leadership. Those ideas that emerge from this process as having the highest potential for broad impact will be discussed with the Institute/Center Directors in October. Further planning will be conducted over the subsequent months for new programs to be launched in FY 2013. The number and complexity of new programs will of course depend on available funds.
ASH is counting on its members to participate in this interactive dialog to shape the NIH strategic planning. Please submit any comments you have to ASH Senior Manager for Scientific Affairs, Ulyana V. Desiderio, PhD, at firstname.lastname@example.org by September 5, 2011.
