ASH Announces the 2011 Translational Research Training in Hematology Participants

(WASHINGTON) – The American Society of Hematology (ASH) and the European Hematology Association (EHA) have announced the names of 20 early-career scientists selected to participate in the second Translational Research Training in Hematology (TRTH) program. Developed jointly between ASH and EHA, TRTH provides promising translational investigators an opportunity to undertake intensive training in the pathogenesis, diagnostics, and experimental treatment of hematologic disorders from some of the most recognized names in the field.

Since the translational researcher of the future needs to understand and direct research in both the European and U.S. systems, TRTH draws on the strengths of the partnership between EHA and ASH to help position young scientists as global leaders in the field of translational research. During the program, leaders in the areas of biostatics and biomarkers, ethics, clinical studies, and genetic and molecular biology foster personalized mentoring through a one-to-one student-to-faculty ratio.

The unique, year-long mentoring experience starts with a one-week intensive training course in Marbella, Spain from March 19 to 25, 2011. The course covers laboratory techniques and skills for translational research, as well as general topics on trial design and implementation of translational research projects. Each scholar presents a research proposal at the beginning of the week that is refined through mentoring and instruction on translational research and scientific methodology in the form of lectures, small working group sessions, and meetings with the faculty.

Further interaction and mentoring take place at two subsequent follow-up courses, one at the EHA annual congress in June 2011 and another in conjunction with the ASH annual meeting in December 2011.

The American Society of Hematology is the world’s largest professional society concerned with the causes and treatment of blood disorders. Its mission is to further the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders affecting blood, bone marrow, and the immunologic, hemostatic, and vascular systems by promoting research, clinical care, education, training, and advocacy in hematology. The official journal of ASH is Blood, the most cited peer-reviewed publication in the field, which is available weekly in print and online.
