New CDC Funding Opportunity for DVT and PE Surveillance

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a new grant program, Population Based Surveillance for Deep-Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE) (CDC-RFA-DD10-1016). The application due date is May 11, 2010. The purpose of the program is to develop and evaluate pilot programs for population-based surveillance of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Given the complexity of diagnosis and care of DVT and PE, the CDC is evaluating models and methods to effectively and validly estimate the public health burden of DVT and PE in the United States.

The pilot programs will serve to not only guide future DVT and PE surveillance activities, but also to aid in the CDC’s comprehensive public health approach to preventing morbidity and mortality and reducing burden from DVT and PE. Surveillance of DVT and PE will help the CDC better understand where to focus research and target prevention measures while also providing a much-needed baseline upon which to assess the effectiveness of prevention efforts.

ASH has worked closely with the CDC to develop a national DVT and PE surveillance program and is pleased to see the grant announcement.
