March is Deep-Vein Thrombosis (DVT) awareness month.
ASH continues to work with several advocacy coalitions and the Department of
Health and Human Services on efforts to increase public awareness of DVT as a
major public health problem. ASH has been very active in encouraging Congress
to support the development of a national thrombosis surveillance system at the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as to support funding
at the National Institutes of Health, CDC, Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality, and other federal agencies to enable research into prevention,
treatment, and cures of DVT.
In fact, critical recommendations from the Society have just been unveiled
in the March 9, 2010, Supplement to American Journal of Preventive Medicine
(AJPM): Blood Disorders in Public Health – Making the Connection. The
recommendations were developed from a national workshop on thrombosis by a
diverse group of representatives from federal health agencies and patient
groups, as well as experts from the medical and public health communities. The
special supplement is being released in conjunction with the first annual National Conference on Blood
Disorders in Public Health on March 9-11, 2010, in Atlanta, GA.
Learn more about these recommendations in the ASH press release or access the report at www.ajpm-online.net.
