ASH Comments on Proposed Oncology Electronic Health Record Requirements

ASH has commented on the proposed Oncology EHR Requirements developed by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT), the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the National Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP).

ASH agrees with the value, purpose and imperative to generate a consensus-driven, common requirements framework for oncology EHR applications and shared these key points:

  1. These requirements would be applicable to malignant hematology with minimal adaptation
  2. With some adaption, these requirements could apply to non-malignant hematology and ASH could be interested in working on such an effort
  3. The Oncology EHR requirements document should more explicitly describe requirements for patient education
  4. General concern regarding the cost of implementing EHRs in the community practice environment
  5. Recognition that interoperability of EHR applications is essential.
