Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and Acting
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Raynard Kington, MD, PhD,
recently announced that NIH had received approximately 20,000 applications for Challenge Grants that are to be funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). According
to Dr. Kington, this marks “the largest response in our [NIH] history
from the scientific community, both in terms of applications and
assistance with the peer-review process.” Scores and summary statements
will be available in August 2009, and Challenge Grant awards will be
issued by September 30, 2009.
The Challenge Grants represent only a small portion of the
ARRA-related funding that NIH will distribute to the research
community. To further assist the research community, NIH is providing
on its Web site a comprehensive listing of all grant opportunities available as a result of ARRA. The site includes a broad outline of the types of projects that NIH expects to fund
as well as resources and detailed information on current Requests for
Applications and Notices related to ARRA funding
opportunities. ARRA-related Web sites have also been developed by the
individual NIH Centers and Institutes such as the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institute on Aging, and National Cancer Institute, among others, in an effort to provide additional guidance on supplemental grants.
Additional information about all ARRA-related NIH grant funding opportunities may also be found on the ASH Web site.
