Federal Agencies Update Stimulus Grant Opportunities; Federal Government Addresses Operational Problems With Grants.gov

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is continuing to announce additional grant opportunities made possible through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

To further assist the research community, NIH is providing on its Web site a comprehensive listing of all grant opportunities available as a result of ARRA. The site includes a broad outline of types of projects that NIH expects to fund as well as resources and detailed information on Requests for Applications and Notices related to ARRA funding opportunities. ARRA-related Web sites have also been developed by the individual NIH centers and institutes such as National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institute on Aging and National Cancer Institute, among others, in an effort to provide additional guidance on the suggested topics of interest for Challenge grants and supplemental grants.

Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced several hematology-specific funding opportunities:

The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) recently acknowledged ongoing problems with submitting applications to the Grants.gov Web site. OMB is responsible for supervising the administration of all ARRA funding, including the funding allocated to NIH and CDC. OMB has indicated that the government has made "significant investments" to upgrade the Web site, and that users will notice improvements shortly. Additionally, OMB staff reported that certain agencies will be implementing alternative means by which interested entities may obtain and submit grant applications. They did not identify which agencies might do so, nor did they offer any indication of when such changes might be announced.

Recognizing the unprecedented opportunities presented by the funding included for NIH in ARRA, as well as the remaining uncertainty over how funds will be distributed and the quick turnaround on grant applications, ASH is continuing to provide updated links to information on NIH grant opportunities relevant to hematology available as a result of ARRA on the Society’s Web site and encourages its members to visit there for the latest information.
