This symposium will bring together clinical experts to share their perspectives on the past, present, and future diagnostic and therapeutic overviews of T-cell lymphoma. The session will utilize multiple methods of participation to engage attendees and enhance the learning process, including compelling faculty presentations, clinical cases from community hematologists/oncologists, an interactive case panel discussion/debate about each case, an audience response system, and an audience question-and-answer session.

This symposiumis structured to help hematologists address the clinical and quality-of-life issues surrounding patients with ITP. Randomized controlled trials of newly licensed agents have brought advances in this area, and new ASH treatment guidelines published in 2011 will help hematologists improve patient outcomes. This symposium will be highly interactive, incorporating numerous case studies and involving audience participation.

This symposium will take a detailed look at the problem of inhibitor development – alloantibodies against infused factor VIII – in patients with hemophilia A. Development of such neutralizing alloantibodies can greatly complicate therapy and have profoundly adverse effects on patient outcome.

Until recently, little progress had been made in the standard treatments for myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), including myelofibrosis, since Dr. William Dameshek classified the Philadelphia-negative MPNs 60 years ago. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration has yet to approve a treatment with an indication specific to myelofibrosis. This symposium will provide a more complete understanding of myelofibrosis and discuss treatment options beyond palliation, including targeted pathway inhibitors, immunomodulation, and epigenetic agents.

Epigenetics is the study of alterations in gene expression caused by mechanisms other than changes in DNA sequence. This symposium will explore how epigenetic changes contribute to malignant transformation in blood cancers. Current research in the epigenetics of blood cancers will be discussed, as well as how that research may be applied to new treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. A special focus will be placed on integrating current, state-of-the-art epigenetic research into clinical practice in order to improve patient outcomes.

The overall objective of this program is to educate hematologists and oncologists about the importance of incorporating early planning for potential hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) into the treatment algorithm for patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The program will increase clinicians’ knowledge about the role of HSCT as part of the overall management strategy for the types of NHL most commonly seen in the community practice setting: follicular lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and mantle cell lymphoma.

In the past, physicians faced the difficulty of a lack of available therapies when treating patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL); today, the difficulty is matching the patient with the best regimen to achieve an optimal and durable response. This symposium, with its focus on real-life case studies and lively discussion, will help clinicians advance from yesterday’s treatment regimens to today’s treatment strategies.
