2014 ASH President: Linda J. Burns, MD

Linda J. Burns, MD, is Professor of Medicine, Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Transplantation at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. She earned her medical degree at the University of Missouri, Columbia, where she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, and completed an internal medicine residency, chief residency, and hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Burns, who has been a member of ASH for over 25 years, was a recipient of an ASH Scholar Award in 1990, and has served the Society as Treasurer, Chair of the Committee on Training Programs, Co-Chair of the Education Program for the annual meeting, Co-Chair of Highlights of ASH, Co-Director of the Clinical Research Training Institute, Co-Director of the ASH and European Society of Hematology's Translational Research Training in Hematology program, and Executive and Deputy Editor of Hematology, in addition to numerous committees.

Dr. Burns is a past president of the Association for Specialty Professors and a recipient of the Association's Eric G. Neilson, MD, Distinguished Professor Award. She is also a past-member of the Board of Directors for the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation where she is also Co-Chair of the Committee on Education and serves on the editorial board for Bone Marrow Transplantation.

Dr. Burns maintains an active clinical practice at the University of Minnesota and serves with the ASH Consult a Colleague program for hematopoietic cell transplantation. As Fellowship Program Director since 1998, she has actively participated in the training of more than 80 fellows and is dedicated to the training and education of future hematologists, as well as to developing and advancing the careers of educators. As a clinical researcher, Dr. Burns' interests include identifying and ameliorating the toxicities and late effects of transplantation and studying novel therapies for hematologic malignancies.
